We sipped wine to a starling serenade
And dropped clues in our muted masquerade
We best-dressed in veils of cotton and silk
And fine-dined on tales of popcorn and milk
We spoke in riddles, but captured the gist
We tasted sweet salt, but we never kissed
We marked time to a flickering white flame
And shared space in a lingering love game
We forlorned the loss of an artist king
And flirt-skirted around a fiery ring
We spoke in whispers, but welcomed the mist
We tied a frayed knot, but we never kissed

Tribute to Michael Jackson

Today, as a tribute to Michael Jackson, I shared my prose on “Music” as today’s Everyday Inspiration choice. See http://everydayinspired.blogspot.com/2009/06/13-prose-music-tribute-to-michael.html
Judged purely on his contribution to music, dance and film, I regard him as one of the most inspiring, talented and pioneering artists ever. His legacy will live on.

Poem: The Harbour
Life’s a great adventure – that’s true:
You brave the storms of grey and blue
You sail across the seven seas
And chase the sunsets on the breeze
You shin the mast and touch the sky
You trim the sails and don’t ask why
But just beneath the thrill and mirth
You long to find a tranquil berth
Life’s a great adventure – such glee:
The ocean tells you that you’re free
The salty air, the surf and spray
Add spice to every night and day
You plot the course and chart the stars
You lift the anchor, break the bars
But even as you rig and roam
You search for signs to make it home
Life’s a great adventure – each day:
You’re blown and buoyed along the way
You weave a yarn and tell your tale
And make a wish as you set sail
The horizon stretches as before
But now you’ve come to know the shore
No longer are you harbourless
What can I say: it’s marvellous!

We Could (new poem)
We could …
But what about consequences?
I’ve thought about it
And savoured the thought
Dreamed about it
And woke up still smiling
So, we could …
But what about responsibilities?
The thrill of beginnings
Leads to the ache of endings
Happy-go-lucky now
Means sad-and-lonely later
Yes, we could …
But what about expectations?
I’ve danced with images
And felt the beat of anticipation
Sung the very scenery
And heard nature join the chorus
No doubt, we could …
But what about destinations?
The paths of travellers
Cross, tangle and part ways
The stars of destiny
Seldom blink and shine in sync
We could …
But would we? And should we?

A Hundred Questions (new poem)
A hundred questions in the room
And on display, the chosen few:
How can we turn the deadly tide?
And will we spurn our toxic pride?
But in my head, the only clue:
I wonder, did she feel it too?
A hundred questions for our time
Some speak in sculpture, some in rhyme:
How can we change our fate most dire?
And can an artist still inspire?
But more intriguing and sublime:
How does she make her canvass shine?
A hundred questions from the floor
Like scattered gold upon the shore:
How fierce the urgency of now?
And can we turn our swords to plough?
But all that I could plot and draw:
Could we have met somewhere before?
A hundred questions in the air
Some speak of hope, some of despair:
What if our waking is too late?
And what’s the dream we can create?
Some questions I could never share:
But did she glimpse enough to care?
A hundred questions from the fray
Like puzzling games for us to play:
How poetry and science can meet?
And will our planet overheat?
Yet colouring my maze of grey:
I hope we meet again some day?
